Find a map, any map – an official map, a map in an atlas, a map on the web. Pick two places on the map, on opposite sides of it. Now get your character from one side to the other. Sounds boring? Not so fast!
> That’s not water - the river is flowing with red hot lava!
> That’s not grass - the field is full of stinging nettles and deadly snakes!
> Maybe the cathedral is guarded by a dragon?
> Maybe the train station is overrun with zombies?
> There’s quicksand in the park, thieves hiding behind trees, buried treasure at the top of the hill.
Make your map into an obstacle course of dangers and difficulties, then challenge your character to travel across it!
Can they do it? How do they overcome these obstacles? Ask yourself why they are risking a dangerous journey – what awaits them on the other side?
My list is just examples – each map will have different features for you to play with.
Good luck – to your characters!
