Grown-ups' bit: about and contact
About the writer
Hello! I am Ruth Hector, a children’s writer from Somerset in England. I have written two children’s novels, currently available on Amazon (see "Snail Male" and "Rosie and the Graliens" below), with a third one in the works.
I spent six year at BBC Scotland working on the website Bitesize, a fun education site for schoolchildren and teachers. I have also worked as an assistant on residential creative writing courses for children at Somerset’s Kilve Court.
In both places it was lovely to watch the children’s enthusiasm as their imaginations blossomed.
About Flying With Words
I began this blog as a way to encourage children to express themselves through creative writing, and not to be put off by anxiety of ‘doing it wrong’. My message is that nobody owns a language; that it is there to be played with, and that the process of experimenting is valuable in its own right. By removing the notion that the end result must be a masterpiece, I hope to remove the fear of trying, of ‘failure’. I want children to feel free to write as they wish. Through ideas, suggestions, advice and anecdotes, my aim is to inspire children to recognise and embrace the expressive potential of creative writing, and in doing so enhance their enjoyment of it.
